Drums!

Local Drummer Mark Jones led our Cubs in an exuberant session of African drumming – using a selection of drums from his collection including Djembe and a Talking Drum as well as a Dumbek (Belly Dancing!) and an Indian Mridangam drum. Take a look at the videos to get a sense of what it was like 🙂

Chief Scout Bronze Awards

Many congratulations to three of our Beaver Scouts who have managed to achieve their Bronze Chief Scout’s Award. This badge demonstrates that as a Beaver they have completed all of their challenge badges and tried lots of new activities. Their badges and certificates were presented at our last meeting by Grey Owl, our District Commissioner.

The Cubs Master the Royal and Ancient Game

Our Cubs had the chance to emulate Luke Donald when we were joined by Katie Dawkins, PGA Pro from the Cowdray Park Golf Club. Katie enthusiastically introduced us to the game in the indoor setting of the Tauntons’ College Hall. The Cubs putted and then drove with increasing confidence, to great effect and with perfect photo finishes 🙂

Group Swimming Champs Again!

It was a night of titanic swimming battles at the Southampton City District Gala yesterday. Our Scouts were narrowly beaten by the 11th Scouts. Our Cubs were narrowly beaten by the 22nd Cubs. Our leading Beaver Swimmer was narrowly beaten into second place in the Beavers final. But consistently good performances by all our Highfield competitors meant that we claimed the coveted overall Group Swimming Trophy for the fourth year in a row!

Here’s some more photos.

Beaver Firemen!

Our Beavers visited St Mary’s fire station, where they all had the chance to look around the station, sit in an engine and play with a fire hose!! They also learnt what to do if there’s a fire in your home and how to make an emergency 999 call. Hopefully all the children have taken away some valuable life skills from our visit. By Monsoon.

Farewell to Nico – and thank you!

We said farewell to Nico at the Pinewood Derby today. He’s moving on to become the Southampton City District Training Manager. But after 16 years as Chairman, Scout Leader and Group Scout Leader he leaves behind the legacy of a Scout Group that reflects his personality – warm, welcoming, friendly and fun! We wish him every success in his new role but hope that he will keep strong links with the 14th.

As well as engraved whisky glasses (and whisky!) we presented him with a display of individual thank you cards that had been made by our Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Leaders.

And all this on top of another exciting, colourful Pinewood Derby. 32 Fantastic Cars entered the competition. Results to follow.
